Dead Island: My Game Crashes At Loading Screen

First how many items did you give Jin? If your game save file is over 10260 then Houston, you have a problem. That’s usually the cause behind your Dead Island gaming crashing to desktop without an error message. Well below – first let me say this is for advanced users only. As of this moment until this glitch is fixed and you’re impatient this is the only solution to getting your game back in working order.

This is a complicated fix and worked. Make sure you back-up your original save file some where outside of the games save folder.

Programs needed:

  1. Winrar or Winzip or something similar to these programs.
  2. Any free hex editor.
  3. Gzip [to zip back up].

Start new game with the same character you used in your crashed game. (ACT 1). Remember which save game is which.
‘save_0′ is the first game created. ‘save_0.sav’ is just a zipped file extension. Win-rar will unzip ‘save_0.sav’ into ‘save_0′ [with no file extension].

In this example [actual save numbers may be different in your case].
save_0: Original save.
save_1: New game you made.

What you need to do now is as follows:

  1. Open save_0 and save_1 in a hex editor.
  2. You will see a bunch of zeros toward the end. After the mob of zeros you will see an 18 followed by more characters.
  3. In the original save delete 18 and everything afterwards.
  4. In the new save, take the hex from the same area and copy and paste where it was in the original. What this does is resets your quest but the file size should be small enough to run the game.
  5. Remember take info from the new game to the original and make sure you have a copy that hasn’t been touched
  6. Use Gzip to zip the save_0 to save_0.gz.
  7. Rename save_0.gz to save_0.sav.

  1. Okay, I kinda solved it. kinda. I found this useful tool called the chapter selector tool (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2113006 near the bottom of the first post) that allows me to choose which chapter i want to overwrite quest progress on. So in order to unlock jin I had to get to chap 5, but because I initially overwritten the hex codes using chap 1′s progress, therefore I was stuck in moresby (the place i was at when i got my game corrupted), with everything unavailable, nobody was around, jin was not there too. . i was in a place i shouldn’t be at my chap 1 progress, i reckon.

I used the chapter selector tool to replace with chap 5′s storyline. After deleting almost 2/3 of my inventory, I found out I still had corrupted game when i tried to replace it with my original quest info, the one that corrupted somehow. so i chose a chapter that’s similar to where i left off. The downside is that all the side quests have to be redone. but i guess that’s a small price than losing all 54 odd hours of game play progress. :)

Also, i read that you don’t actually have to use gzip to compress the edited hex file back. just adding a .sav back would do.

hope this helps the next person who needs this info! :)

  2. Okay, i got my game back, but the problem is, I don’t have all my quests (only 2 – one from resort and another in chap 1.. i don’t have jin unlocked, so i can’t delete my items or enter the church as well. so what now?

    • Wow, what a predicament you’re in. I don’t understand though, if you don’t have her unlocked? Why can’t you load the game? Is this before or after you got your game back?

  3. oh my, i fell into this terrible save corruption a sec too late. Read about jin’s inventory and save corruption 1 day after i already quit the game. i loaded it today, intending to delete not needed items, but already it crashed. am going to try this method, but ugh i feel like i’m trying to diffuse a bomb.

I’m at the point where i successfully deleted the stuff after the string of 0000s and replaced with my new save, but thing is, there is no gzip for windows 7 :/ any alternative zip programs i can use? please let me know!

Thanks for this, really appreciate it asilee!
