Make sure your game is updated by being online and launching The Sims 3. Some downloaded items won’t install unless your game is up to date. There are many fan sites on the web that offer free custom content for The Sims 3 or free downloads for The Sims 3. There is now a fan made and fan maintained alphabetical wiki that is serving as a table of contents for all this free custom content that is available on the web for The Sims 3.
Browse around all the free Sims 3 custom content and free Sims 3 downloads sites. Find the items that you want in your game and download them.
You may wish to create a separate folder on your desktop for each site that you download from, and download into those folders. This will help you to keep track of where you got which items.

It is considerably easier to install downloads in The Sims 3 than it was in previous versions of the game. Make sure all your items are fully downloaded before you try to install them.

Others won’t work because of the latest patches so as of February of 2010 its best to wait or hold off on downloading any mods or downloads from content sites until they have updated their mods/downloads/custom content.
To install these mods you will have to make a folder in C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts and add what is called a .cfg resource file outside of that folder and one inside of that folder. Make sure you name that folder ‘Mods’.
If your game becomes problematic after downloading mods, content and the like, uninstall the downloads. To uninstall items from The Sims 3, open the game launcher and click on the ‘Installed Content’ button; select the items that you want to uninstall. Click on the ‘uninstall’ button.
