L4D writer Chet Faliszek has discussed the game’s new content
During a recent trip to Valve’s Washington HQ, X360 magazine spoke exclusively to the game’s writer about the recently announced DLC pack ‘Crash Course’.
“It’s two maps both with co-op story stuff and multiplayer and then there’s also survival,” said Chet Faliszek of the new content. “They’re set right after No Mercy, you’re with the helicopter pilot who ends up getting infected and crashing. You find your truck that you’re going to go to Death Toll. We were originally hoping to do that just with the beginning and ends of the games but it ended up that we really wanted this finale of having survived and the beginning we kind of wanted you to know more of what you’re moving towards. So, we thought this was a cool way to do it and we’d planned this out before L4D 1 had shipped.”
“You can kind of see some of the L4D2 stuff in there”
Crash Course, available some time in September, is the second significant chunk of DLC for the first Left 4 Dead following the April release of the Survival pack.
Faliszek also hinted at some surprises in Crash Course: “There’ll be something that happens later this year that will, I think, help this stuff to sink in. There’s a little Easter egg hidden, where in one of the rooms there’s a map that shows the possible places to go in the US, so you can kind of see some of the L4D2 stuff in there.”

Strategy Guide for the game:
The Alleys [Versus] Trivia
- The body of the Chopper Pilot can be found directly behind the starting point of this chapter. Each Survivor will comment on this, excluding Bill.
- Francis thinks that the Survivors are in Canada.
- There is a possibility of a Tank appearing just after you leave the helicopter wreckage.
- When entering the Warehouse, Safe room Graffiti can be found in the small room adjacent to the entrance. Judging by the fact that the graffiti is found in a room that is not an official “safe room”, the graffiti found inside the room supports some theories that a group of bikers were using it as a makeshift safe room.
- Judging by the graffiti mentioned above, the bikers mentioned in the graffiti are believed to have taken a similar view on the Infection in a manner much like that of Francis since the graffiti features a tally made by a biker gang which more than likely represents a Infected kill count for each biker. The tic marks on the tally marked with different colored marker probably represent Special Infected killed. In conclusion, the bikers’ reaction to the outbreak can be seen as being more practical than serious due to their aggressive and violent nature.
- Some graffiti features the title “Angels of Death” and skulls below with names on them, as well as a large group of tallies (660). It may indicate that, most likely, a band of bikers (according to the name and the skulls) stayed there till their death and counted their kills as they held out.
- There is a note next to the sketches of the gang skulls mocking them saying, “World is coming to an end and they are drawing pictures.” The writing above it inscribes, “SICK Bastards”, probably agreeing with the previous comment on the bikers moral values.
- Francis mentions working for a delivery company after passing by a delivery truck. He continues and claims he quit because of the shorts.
- The new starting menu screen takes place of the fallen helicopter of The Alleys. However, this menu screen update may be exclusive to the PC version of the game since the menu screen for the X-box version appears to be completely unchanged.
- It is possible that this level is a test of the new director abilities to be seen in Left 4 Dead 2, at least in part. For example, the alarmed cars can be in different places around the level, and random weapon spawn where they aren’t always in groups, a trend seen in beta footage for Left 4 Dead 2.
- This chapter was named “The Train Station” from Blood Harvest‘s chapter 4. Which was then changed to The Alleys
Truck Depot Finale
- Here you can easily get “The Littlest Genocide” achievement. When the generator turns off and the second Tank is dead, endless hordes of Infected will attack. However, Special Infected can still spawn and attack.
- Shortly after leaving the Safe room, there is an method that can be used to skip a quarter of the section which requires jumping on the alarmed car jammed next to the fence by the Humvee in order to leap over the barbed wire fence and on top of the truck on the other side. This method will take the player straight to the truck yard adjacent to the Truck Depot. However, Survivors should take caution in this method as it will require alerting the horde which is completely unavoidable upon performing the method.
- A popular camping spot for the finale is up with the minigun in the garage. One of the Survivors can get on the minigun and cover one side of the garage area as the other Survivors take care of the rest. Melee is a big help here as the Common Infected have a large area to climb up to your position and will also stream down from the windows. The small window at the other end from the minigun is a favorite spawning place for Special Infected.
Trivia
- When the rescue vehicle arrives, the door in the back seems to explode, instead of open in any way.
- The minigun is somewhat hard to find. Walking straight into the garage, jumping up onto the cardboard boxes, then going to a corner will put it in view.
- Sometimes one of the two Tanks in the Finale will not spawn. The music turns on but the Tank does not arrive and the music turns off and the next Horde comes up.
- The Tank will also sometimes spawn suddenly behind the survivors when standing near the generator (unconfirmed)
- In the graffiti underneath the large letter there are numerous quotes referring to popular internet memes. Some of the references made include, “Cool Story Bro!”, QQ (depicting mock sadness, as in crying eyes), “Roses are red, Violets are Blue, You Suck.”, and “PS I’M FAT!”.
- If you stand under the rescue vehicle as it is lowered all the way down, you will be incapacitated, and die a few seconds later.
- Up to now it has happened one time that the Generator didn’t turn off. The second Tank dies, then the “Final Music” starts and the back door of the rescue vehicle opens, but the Generator stays on. It’s funny, because the turning off of the Generator is the panic key of this Finale.
- When you come to the truck yard over the crashed truck you can see that the tunnel before the yard is closed at all directions. When the Survivors drive away with the bus they drive in this tunnel – now it is arguable in which direction they will drive to escape.
