In The Sims 3, you don’t have to have a job to make money [especially if you don't want one], here is a guide that shows you just what I mean.
Buying a business to make money:
All you would have to do is click on the business you would like to buy you can be a partial owner or a full owner, just make sure you have enough money to buy these businesses. You’ll have to pick up the money once a week. That’s for all the businesses you buy. In Sim days, it would take 6-7 weeks or so to pay for themselves. If you don’t pick up one week’s profits, it’ll accumulate onto the next weeks profits so don’t worry about losing money.
Exploring the Catacombs:
In the graveyard in Sunset Valley, there is a catacomb in the mausoleum that you can explore. There are jewels, items, books and sometimes bears when you explore the Catacombs. This is not much of a reliable way to make money but if you like to see the outcome of every time your Sim explore the catacombs then feel free.
Playing the guitar:
This one is pretty good and easy. Just simply take your Sim to the park when his or her guitar skills is at its max and make your Sim play the guitar for tips. Just make sure there is a guitar in your inventory. One time I made up to almost $1000 Simoleons playing the guitar at the park.
Fishing:
Fishing brings in the big money, especially if one of your Sims traits is an Angler. Just simply visit any fishing area and let your Sim fish. Once you’re done and your Sim has a large amount of fish, just simply sell it from your inventory or go to the supermarket.
Collecting:
This one is fun. If you have enough lifetime achievement points left over buy the The Collector. This will help you find seeds, gems, metals and bugs. Some which can be worth a lot of Simoleons. This also a good way to find money tree seeds.
Gardening:
As I mentioned before about the Collector. Go around town and find all the seeds you can with the collector set to ‘seeds’. You’ll find some pretty uncommon to special seeds. If you’re lucky and you won’t need much luck, you’ll find a bunch of money tree seeds. This also a good way to bring in money. If you don’t take care of the trees though, bills will fall off and you will have to pay them or a Repo man or woman will come to your house. You can make a lot of money with your other seed findings as well. If you’re gardening skills is high or you have the green thumb trait and lifetime reward, you’ll have high quality vegetables and fruits you can sell in no time.
Hacking:
In the Sims 3 yes you can hack. You will need to computer whiz trait to hack simoleons into your household income. When you get better at hacking, the amount of money you make will grow. On occasions you’ll get caught hacking and your computer will need to be repaired. Lets just home you’re at least a 5 in your handiness skill.
Painting:
This is another easy and fun way to make money. Just simply paint and the better you get, the more money you make. It helps some to have the Artistic or the perfectionist trait and the extra creative achievement reward. If you also have good paintings in your inventory, they’ll grow in value over time and when you sell them you can get a nice amount of Simoleons for it.
Writing:
One of my favorites. This is another one where you kill two birds or maybe three with one stone. Try having the perfectionist trait and the extra creative achievement reward for this one; also a computer of course. Just simply write books, depending on what you write [Master Piece brings in a lot of money but takes a lot of time to write] you can have a lot of money flowing in every Sunday for six weeks.
Solving the unsolvable:
If you have the genius trait and a computer, you can solve math problems to earn money sometimes the end result is the Scientific community laughing at your Sim and failing to solve the math equation but that’s it mostly.
Search the galaxy:
Get a telescope and aim for the stars. The Science Academy will reward you for your findings. This can raise your logic skills if they aren’t as high but you must be at level 3 logic skill to search the galaxy.
Being a Kleptomaniac has its advantages obviously:
If your Sim is a klepto, your Sim can go around taking property from other Sims but it must be during the night. If your Sim is near something of value which is important if you want money, your sim will snatch it. If you want that Sim to have their property back just simply go to the mailbox and there is an option to return stolen items. This way you’ll get money for it.
